Claiming a Tariff Preference for Trading

When you are preparing to export goods from the UK, your Customs Clearance Agents UK will need to know the type of goods you’re preparing to ship and where their end destination will be.

Once you have provided your Customs Clearance Agents UK with the details of your shipment, including the commodity codes for the goods, they will be able to check the UK Trade Tariff to see if there is a Tariff Preference between the UK and the country of destination.

If your Customs Clearance Agents UK then advises you that your goods are covered for a Tariff Preference under the UK Trade Tariff, you will be able to claim a reduced duty rate on the import of the goods. However, your Customs Clearance Agents UK will advise you that your goods must meet the ‘Rules of Origin’ to be able to claim the Tariff Preference Rate. The rules of Origin are different depending on which country you are exporting to.

If you are importing from a developing country, your goods will be covered under the ‘Developing Countries Trading Scheme’.

Your Customs Clearance Agents UK will advise what proof and documents you will need to be able to claim the Tariff Preference. Usually, this requires a Certificate of Origin, you will need to apply for this from the Chamber of Commerce in the UK. Your Customs Clearance Agents UK can apply for this on your behalf at their discretion.
