  • Residence card (在留カード)
  • Inkan (personal seal or signature)
  • Proof of parking space (車庫証明書 – Shako Shomeisho): Required for non-Kei cars

  • From a dealer: They’ll handle most paperwork, inspection, and registration.
  • From a private party:Must handle the paperwork yourself at the 陸運局 (Rikuunkyoku – Land Transport Office)
  1. Vehicle Registration & Taxes
  • Registration is handled after the purchase.
  • Shaken (車検): Mandatory vehicle inspection every 2 years (or 3 for new cars).
  • Road Tax & Weight Tax: Paid annually and at the time of shaken.

Insurance:

  • Jibaiseki (mandatory)
  • Optional but recommended: Nini Hoken (comprehensive)
