RULES WHEN SHIPPING TO
AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND
Australia has some of the strictest guidelines when importing a vehicle. A “rolling 25 year law” allows vehicles manufactured on or before 1995 to be imported after meeting basic safety requirements. The rule is adjusted each year to allow vehicles 25 years or older. Another law allows for vehicles purchased and used overseas for at least one to be imported.
Along with the 25 year law, Australian Biosecurity requirements ensure that all imported vehicles be inspected for Asbestos. The inspection is the importers responsibility. ROLL-ON ROLL-OFF (RORO)
RORO vessels are essentially parking garages on the ocean. Vehicles are driven onto the ship, secured, and protected from the elements. RORO shipping is perfect for those seeking competitive rates– and occasionally has the advantage of faster transit times compared to containers.
SHARED OR DEDICATED CONTAINER SHIPPING
Container shipping offers several options. It is ideal for non-running classic cars, offers more port locations, and can be extremely quick depending on your selection.
Shared container shipping is just as it sounds. Your cargo is shipped with other cargo in a shared container. All fees are shared between customers using the container, such as terminal handling charges, loading / unloading charges, and trucking of the container to and from the terminals.
Dedicated container shipping works the same way as shared container, but your cargo is the only thing in the container. This is typically used if the customer needs the vehicle in a hurry or if it’s shipping to a location that we do not offer container consolidations to. This service is more expensive than RORO and shared container, but is one of the quickest options outside of Air Freight.
AIR FREIGHT SERVICES
Air freight shipping is the quickest service available, but is also the least used. Due to the cost, air freight is typically used for rare vehicles and time sensitive shipments.

The Australian government are very strict on asbestos checks for all vehicles entering Australia, and without proof the vehicle is free from asbestos parts contamination, it won’t be allowed into the country. Trans Global Logistics UK works with a UKAS accredited company for these checks, which is the highest asbestos approval accreditation in the UK and approved by NATA and the Australian government
These are the aeras that must be checked for asbestos.
Vehicle Asbestos check list
1. All engine gaskets.
2. Head gasket.
3. Exhaust manifold gaskets and heat shields.
4. Cylinder head cover gasket.
5. Obvious rope gaskets to exhaust system.
6. Material in engine compartment/Engine cover.
7. Brake pads one side only, front and rear.
8. Air filter cleaner.
9. Clutch.
A sample of material is taken and tested in the laboratory. Accessing these areas is a specialist task and we work with an experienced garage to expose the areas we need to sample. If we discover that any of the parts that we have tested contain asbestos, they will provide a quotation to replace it.
The cost of exposing the parts varies depending on the complexity of the vehicle that is being testing, and the Laboratory analysis of samples taken, including the all-important detailed certificate detailing the parts that have been tested, with the results costs £425.00 + vat this does not include transport to/from the test site.
