SHIP a car to UK? Check the new Budget for tax changes first!

Whether you Ship a Car, import Cars from Japan to UK or buy a new car for Vehicle Transport UK please be aware that Petrol and diesel owners could be impacted by major tax updates announced by the Chancellor Rachel Reeves in her first Labour’s Autumn Budget with petrol and diesel owners set to feel the sting. The Budget confirmed plans to “increase the differential” between electric cars and combustion models from next Spring. So, if you plan to ship a car in the UK you will need to do careful counting.
Why? Because this will mean that electric car owners will pay a separate level of VED than petrol and diesel owners. This possibly all in the aim to act as an incentive to switch?
However, EVs will start paying VED from next April as years of car tax exemptions come to a close.
Rachel Reeves also said that she will maintain the incentives for electric vehicles within the company car tax scheme and increase the differential between fully electric and other vehicles in the first-year rates of Vehicle Excise Duty from April 2025.
VED rates are currently sat at £190 per year but this is subject to increase and fees could rise before next Spring.
There was concern, prior Budget release, that many electric car owners could also be slapped with a double blow as many models (valued over £40,000) are issued with an extra £410 charge for its first five years due to the Expensive Car Supplement. The hefty upfront cost of EVs means many owners making the switch could be caught out by the costs.
So overall good news for some people that Ship a car from abroad …and may be bad for others that already have Ship a car from abroad.
