Driven your Vehicle from the EU to the UK? – What to do – Customs Clearance

Since Brexit there has been a lot of changes to the rules for vehicles going from and to the EU from the UK.

If you have driven your vehicle from the EU to the UK on a permanent basis, there are some steps you will need to take to enable you to register the vehicle in the UK. Your Customs Clearance Agents UK will go through the process with you, as we will explain below, it is essential you do this as close to your arrival date in the UK as possible to avoid complications.

First, you will need to find a Customs Clearance Agents UK who will be able to handle the import process and submit an Import Declaration on your behalf to HMRC.

Your Customs Clearance Agents UK will need the following information and documentation to be able to process the Import Declaration for you.

  1. Bill of Sale for the vehicle – This must be dated within the last three years, if you do not have a Bill of Sale within the last three years, your Customs Clearance Agents UK will advise you that you will need to have the vehicle valuated by an independent Motor Trader or Garage, online valuations are not accepted by HMRC.
  2. Copy of the vehicle registration document.
  3. Your Ferry Crossing Details – You must include the charge you paid for the Ferry Crossing, the Ferry Line you used, and the vehicle registration/license plate number.

Once you provide this information and documentation to your Customs Clearance Agent UK, they will be able to lodge the Import Declaration for your vehicle. They will then advise you of the Tax and Duty amount applicable for the Import of your vehicle which will have been received directly from HMRC. You will then pay your Customs Clearance Agents UK all fees applicable, and they will make payment to HMRC on your behalf.

Once all Taxes and Duties have been paid, your vehicle will clear UK Customs and be declared as in ‘Free Circulation’ within the UK. Your Customs Clearance Agents UK will then advise you that you will be able to apply for the NOVA Letter online, or they can make this request with HMRC for you. The NOVA Letter is a ‘Notification of Vehicle Arrival’.

Once you have obtained your NOVA Letter, you will be able to proceed with registering the vehicle in the UK.
