When you are preparing to import or export into or out of the UK as a sale, your Customs Clearance Agents UK will advise you of several key pieces of information you will need to have confirmed before shipment, one of which will be considering which Inco Term is used for the shipment.
Your Customs Clearance Agents UK will advise you that Incoterms are terms of Sale which are used to define international transport movements, which identifies who pays for the different aspects of the shipment journey and arrange each part of the movement. Your Customs Clearance Agents UK will also advise you that you need to establish the Incoterms as part of the sale when making the contract for the sale of the goods, this will determine where the shipper/seller responsibility ends and where the consignee/buyer’s responsibility starts. This is also known as the transfer of risk.
There are a total of 11 Incoterms. Your Customs Clearance Agents UK will advise you of the most frequently used Incoterms which are as follows:
- EXW – Ex Works – Your Customs Clearance Agents UK will advise you under the Incoterm EXW, the seller/shipper is responsible for making the goods available for collection from the warehouse or their facility. The consignee/buyer then holds responsibility for organising and making payments for all other costs of transport to the port of loading, customs, documentation, freight, unloading and tax and duty costs and arrangement to final place of delivery.
- FOB – Free on Board (Named Place) – Your Customs Clearance Agents UK will advise you under the FOB Incoterm the seller/shipper is responsible for the packing of the goods, delivery to the place of loading, export customs documentation, and costs for
loading on board the internation freight mode. After this point the buyer/consignee starts to pay for costs for the remainder of the freight journey.
- CIF – Cost Insurance and Freight – Your Customs Clearance Agents UK will advise you under the CIF Incoterm the seller/shipper is responsible for the transport and handling costs up to the destination port/airport including the insurance. The buyer/consignee then becomes responsible for customs clearance on arrival, taxes and duties, handling costs and the final delivery.
Your Customs Clearance Agents UK will advise you to look through all Incoterms and come to an agreement for the sale with Incoterms both parties agree with.
