With the UK – India trade agreement having had time to settle into play, here are the important points that you need to know and how that impacts your business or how you ship a car.
Signed on the 24th of July 2025 and coming into force on 15th of July 2026, the Comprehensive Economic and Trade agreement (CETA) was an agreement expected to boost bilateral trade by £25.5Bn.
Trade between the countries was worth £48Bn in 2025, so by signing this agreement it secured the future of trade between these powerful trading units. With 90% of trade from the UK to India and 99% of Indian Goods to the UK being duty free, we can be sure that trade between the UK and India is only set to rise over the coming years.
What does this mean for my business?
This agreement is the conclusion of years of talk between the countries and will result in many larger scale benefits for UK businesses. The agreement aims to create simpler customs procedures for businesses importing/exporting goods or materials. Aswell as clearer exporting rules will come into play, making it even easier to ship a car, in the hopes to push business inside the UK to trade with India. The ease of trade should increase with lower tariff rates being introduced, which will directly impact the trade between the countries.
The role this plays in the automotive industry:
UK component manufacturers will now be tariff free when exporting to India, leading to large volumes of production being off shored to India, to lower costs. Supported by India providing reduced tariffs to ship a car within a quota from the UK. This agreement will decrease costs for vehicle manufactures and we can hope to see smaller manufacturers utilising this agreement.
